Grad School: My “OMG I Wish I had a…” Kit

Hi All!Grad School (2)

Firstly, I must give credit to The College Prepster for giving me this idea. The name of the kit is of her creation (as far as I know), and you can find the blog posts on her “OMG I Wish I had a…” Kit here and here.

I usually just call my kit my zebra bag (but with the new design, I’ll have to come up with a better name for it, so I’ll stick with her name for now… see below).

Secondly, please know that this kit includes what I feel is important for me to have most places, and it sometimes changes depending on where I go (trips/events) and what I think I might need. If you decide to put together a similar kit, please know that it’s okay to not have the exact same things in your kit as I do in mine.

The point of the kit is to relieve nerves surrounding accidentally forgetting something.

In other words, prioritize what’s important for you to have on you.

Example: I don’t wear makeup, so my kit doesn’t have makeup in it. The College Prepster does wear makeup and feels better knowing she has lip-stick in her kit, in case she needs a touch-up or forgets to put it on.

The contents of the kit rarely change, and I revise them only when I add something or decide I don’t need it as much as I thought I might.

For example, I used to carry a mini case of headache medicine in my kit, but I determined I usually always have a full bottle of headache medicine in my purse, and so the mini case was just taking up space.

This kit is meant to be a throw it in your purse and forget it until you need it kind of bag, and I find it’s super useful and definitely helps calm my nerves about forgetting something.

I probably reach into it more than I should because I’ve decided to keep bobby pins, mints, and chewing gum in the kit so they aren’t floating in my purse. BUT, it works for me, and that’s what’s important.

Without further ado, here’s my “OMG I Wish I had a…” Kit:

The bag is new. I used to keep my kit in a zebra-patterned cosmetic case, but after using it for a few years, it got worn out and dirty. I recently picked this case up from Target, and I also picked up a matching pencil case (fyi, both are cosmetic bags). I really like it because it has a zippered pocket and an extra pouch.

Here’s what I have in the kit:

-Hair Ties (I also keep some hooked to my keys)

-Mini Butterfly Hair Clip

-Mentos Peppermint Mints

-Hand Sanitizer

-Folding Hairbrush

-Ear Plugs (hopefully I can find some stylish ones)

-Tic Tac Box with bobby pins and straight pins (this is a trick I got from Pinterest)

-Hair Clip

-Orbit Peppermint Chewing Gum

-Cough Drops

-Chap stick

-I sometimes carry band-aids in my kit. My place of work usually has some and my carrying case for them is kind of bulky, so I usually go without.

-If I have a cold or something, I will usually put some cold medicine into the kit

-If I’m travelling, I will usually throw in a little bit of extra cash (no more than $20)

-If I have multiple events where I need to be dressed nice, I will throw in a necklace and pair of earrings

That’s what I have in my kit. I think it will definitely come in handy as I start grad school because goodness knows I will have so much going on that I don’t want to worry if I forgot something that day.

Next week, I’ll chat about what I keep in my purse, but until then, let me know what you think of my kit and whether or not you have something like it!
